If this is the new era, the new “it rivalry” in men’s tennis, then we are blessed. Carlitos and Jannik put on a show for the ages, and Wilander was front row for the spectacle.
Also…Coco’s brand appeal is skyrocketing, as she takes down the great Sabalenka, in a ladies final that wasn’t too shabby in its own right!
She’s fierce, and she is coming on strong. Peyton Stearns was a 3rd set TB-winning machine on her way to the Italian semis. Good news for the American women on clay!
And…”hey Mats, how do you enjoy being treated like tennis royalty while in Europe?”
“Well, it reminds my wife that at one time in my life I wasn’t a complete dumba$$!”
It almost feels like it was the stone age, since Mats won his 2nd French back in ’85. So much has changed in 40 years, but maybe…just maybe some things have stayed the same.
And…”hey Jonny, if Mats doesn’t get tripped up by Chesnokov in the quarters in ’89, is it possible, perhaps even PROBABLE that Chang doesn’t win that lone major?”
It doesn’t happen often, certainly not to Grigor. But yes, he got double-bagel’d in Monte Carlo in 44 minutes. Says Wilander, “trust me, it happens to the best of us!”
And, Racquet Sports Professionals Association (RSPA) CEO Brian Dillman joins the show to talk about the plans going forward for the former USPTA.
Is Men’s tennis losing its footing? Is the sport a little out of balance? Says Wilander, “We’ve been here before and the game came out stronger. Hopefully these times lead to a similar outcome.”
And, “hey Jonny, what’s with this Colton Smith?” And of course, Mensik gets more than just a mention!
A rare sit-down with Andre Agassi
On March 15th, AZ sat down with Andre Agassi at Phoenix Country Club during Jonny’s Arizona Tennis Classic (ATP Challenger), for 30 minutes of vintage Andre.
Insightful, entertaining, and candid as always. It was a great crowd, and Agassi did not disappoint.
Get ready tennis world, this kid is coming. Says Wilander of Joao Fonseca, ” this kid will be top 5 in two years”. By the looks of things in Phoenix, it’s pretty hard to dispute that call. He’s a rock star already…at 18!
